St. Peter’s to mark centenary year at Saints Quadrangular
The centenary year celebration of St. Peter’s College Colombo will be worked off at the college ground in Bambalapitiya with the amalgamation of Saints Quadrangular, held annually among four leading catholic schools of Sri Lanka. Set to take place on October 29 and 30, the multi-sport event will feature a T10 cricket, 7-a-side rugby and basketball competitions among the school teams of St. Peter’s, St. Joseph’s, St. Benedict’s and St. Anthony’s Katugastota.
This year, marking a milestone for the hosts, the tournament will also see senior schoolboys taking part in the 52nd edition of the Saints Quadrangular. Looking back at the beginning of the Saints Quadrangular, as part of the 60th year celebrations of St. Benedict’s College in 1963, the school from Kotahena organised a cricket tournament inviting all leading schools.
But coincidentally, only St. Peter’s, St. Joseph’s and St. Anthony’s turned up, prompting Old Antonian, Ranjith Samarasekera to initiate the Saints Quadrangular sports event. Since then, the tournament has been a flagship event for these four premier catholic schools.
In 2002, the organisers introduced a 25-over tournament for old boys of Over-40. In 2004, basketball was included to the series. A tournament which started with cricket has now grown into a sports carnival with the introduction of the 7-a-side rugby tournament in 2014.
The Quadrangular Trophy is presented to the winners of the two cricket tournaments while the Very Rev. Fr. Joe E. Wickramasinghe Trophy is presented to the basketball winners and Arthur Hakel Trophy is presented to the rugby winners.
