FFSL election by December 28 under existing constitution
The election AGM of Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) should take place on or before December 28, according to a decision which came to effect last Thursday, after a hearing at the Court of Appeal.
Accordingly the Director General of Sports gave an undertaking to the Court of Appeal that the election AGM of FFSL will be held within 69 days commencing from Thursday, October 20. Additional Solicitor General Sumathi Dharmawardena PC, appearing for respondents Minister of Sports, Roshan Ranasinghe and the Director General, Department of Sports, gave this undertaking in connection with a writ petition filed by FFSL President Jaswar Umar and FFSL Secretary Upali Hewage. Umar and Hewage filed a petition challenging the legality of the gazette notification issued by Sports Minister dated September 22, 2022, which dissolved the sport governing bodies that did not duly hold its elections and AGMs, including the FFSL administration.
Additional Solicitor General Dharmawardena further informed court that the Sports Minister would appoint an Election Committee within 14 days, to look into the activities relating to the elections.
The upcoming election AGM would take place within the period of 69 days from October 20, following the existing constitution of FFSL registered with the Department of Sports and also according to the Sports Law and Regulations. Following the election AGM, the new executive committee should pass the amended at a Special General Meeting, according to the requirements of FIFA, Asian Football Confederation and the Ministry of Sports.
