16th Nationals on October 22-23
The 16th National Sepaktakraw Championship, conducted by the Amateur Sepaktakraw Association of Sri Lanka (ASTASL) will be held on October 22 and 23 at the Kandy Municipal Council, Indoor Stadium in Katukele. This will be the first time the National Sepaktakraw Championship is being held in Kandy.
The Championship will be conducted in the categories of Men’s Open, Women’s Open, Junior (Under-21 Boys) and Veterans (Over-40), while events will be held in Regu, Doubles and Hoop. Incidentally the Hoop event will be introduced for the first time in Sri Lanka.
This is the third major sepaktakraw event in four months after the new executive committee of ASTASL was elected in May. Earlier they held the Solo Ball Control Championship and took part in the World Sepaktakraw Championship in Thailand.
Approximately 100 team entries are expected to take part from 36 affiliated clubs to compete in this tournament. Already teams from Puttalam, Welimada, Kalmunai and Weeraketiya have confirmed participation. The draw for the event was held yesterday at Otters Aquatic Club.
Nine trophies will be on offer for Men’s Open Regu, Men’s Open Double, Men’s Open
Hoop, Women’s Open Regu, Women’s Open Double, Women’s Open Hoop, Junior’s Under-21 Regu, Junior’s Under-21 Doubles and Veterans Over-40 Regu.
In addition, awards will be presented for the best player of the tournament in both Men and Women as well as for best tekong/server, best striker/killer, best setter/feeder and best hoop player of the tournament. The championship will be held under the patronage of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Kandy Municipal Council.
