Sri Lanka needs to strengthen cooperation between India in the fields of higher education, skill development and capacity building especially in India’s STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) and IT sectors, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said recently.

He said this at the ceremony marking 58 years of capacity building partnership between India and Sri Lanka through the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC).

The ITEC day celebration by the Indian High Commission also took place this week.

ITEC is a flagship programme of the Indian Government in September 1964 to extend technical assistance and enhance capacity building of friendly developing countries.

High Commissioner Gopal Baglay highlighted India’s endeavor to help Sri Lanka in the education sector through partnership between higher education institutes in India and Sri Lanka, besides the current 402 ITEC slots and around 700 scholarships offered every year.
