The Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa has introduced an “Udaw Kambaraya” (Helping room).

Children who can afford are given the opportunity to bring extra food to school, which would be handed over to the “Udaw Kambaraya”, from which food will be available to students, who have not had meals. This idea has been extended to school uniforms.

“Our objective is not only providing food for the needy children, but also developing the giving mentality among children,’’ said principal Hasitha Kesara Weththamuni.

At present, 65 primary students have been identified as needy. While no one had been identified in higher grades, and any child who has not bought a mid-day meal is given a meal.

The principal expects to extend the “Udaw Kambaraya” to other schools in the zone.
