Farmers should be able to reap the benefits of any research as they are the the backbone of agriculture, said Agriculture Minister  Mahinda Amaraweera recently,

He was speaking at the 24th session of the Agriculture Department Symposium held at the Plant Genetic Resource Center in Gannoruwa on Friday. The minister was chief guest at the event.

The theme of the Symposium was ” Seed the Land- Feed the Nation “.

The minister further said that the need of the hour is to grow more food and to this end it has been decided to allocate inorganic material to the farmer who needs them for their cultivation.

He said scientists are engaged in research and their outputs should go down the line to the farmer so that that they could benefit from their findings.

He said he was appreciative of the fact the the symposium has been continuing with their work for over 20 years now.

The Chairperson for the Symposium 2022 was Dharsana S.Ratnasinghe.

The keynote address was by Emeritus Professor Ogata Kazuo of the University of Kyushu, Japan.

Agriculuture Department Director General Dr.Ajantha de Siva and Secretary of the Minsitry M.B.R.Phusphamukara also addressed the Symposium

Shanta Emitiyagoda received the Award for Agriculture excellence while Manel Gunawardene received the Gold Medal for best agriculturist of the year.

The Gold medal for best scientist of the year was awarded to Dr.Deepal Kumari Ratnayake.
