As many as 12 acres of paddy lands were destroyed by 25 elephants in the Kottukachchiya area of Anamaduwa on Thursday.

Farmers said they had cultivated the lands despite difficulties arising from fertiliser and fuel issues.

A farmer said that, on that particular day, he could not stay overnight at the field as his son had a chest pain. The next morning he found the field damaged. The field is owned by Sunil Tilakaratna and his son R D Sanath Gunatillaka.
