Railway trade unions say that Chinese manufactured railway carriages worth millions of rupees have been left to rot near the Puttalam Railway Station.

Ten railway carriages brought to the railway station and left there have been exposed to the elements over the past two months.

The carriages were imported in 2009 and 2010 when Dullas Alahapperuma was Minister of Transport.

Unions allege that the carriages were imported disregarding concerns raised by them over issues in their breaking system. About 100 such carriages were imported squandering taxpayer funds, but most have since been taken off service, according to them.

The ten carriages at the Puttalam Railway Station include two Second Class carriages, and all carriages are still in excellent condition. Unions note that it is a criminal waste of resources to let such carriages decay.
