The Government, after allowing a month-long state of emergency to lapse, is to request foreign countries to lift travel advisories warning their citizens about their visits to Sri Lanka.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Tuesday announced that the government had no intention of continuing with the state of emergency with the improvement of the situation. Accordingly the state of emergency was allowed to lapse on Thursday midnight.

The request to foreign countries comes after the Government took into consideration the reality that the state of emergency was an obstacle to attract tourists as it entails high insurance premiums, apart from being a distraction for foreign tourists. The US, Britain, Canada, Australia and Ireland are among the countries that have imposed travel warning against visits to Sri Lanka.

Prior to the announcement, the Sunday Times learns that  the government took into consideration the implications of continuity of the state of emergency. Among them has been the inability to organise major events which attracts foreign visitors.

The next month’s sessions of the UN Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva too had been taken into consideration.

The Law and Order Ministry also has pointed out to the National Security Council that only two arrests have been made under emergency regulations and other existing laws were sufficient to deal with the security situation.
