Three women were killed and 18 others sustained injuries after a tractor veered off the road and crashed in Muttur, Trincomalee yesterday.

The victims had been on their way to take part in a Shramadhana campaign being held at the Kottiyarama Moola Maha Viharaya in Muttur when they met with the tragedy.

The ancient temple is currently being renovated and is situated on top of a mountain. The road leading to it is situated on a steep incline. Area residents say the road is dangerous and several tractors had met with similar accidents in the past.

The victims had been on their way to the temple on foot but had hitched a ride on a tractor that was transporting cement to the temple. Due to the steep incline however, the trailer with the victims had detached from the tractor, gone off the road and toppled over.

The injured victims were admitted to the Muttur Hospital for treatment. Three of the injured were in critical condition last evening while some who had sustained minor injuries were discharged.
