From 16 – 20 July of this year, the students of APIIT Law School took part in the Mediation and Negotiation Competition known as the Consensual Dispute Resolution Competition (CDRC) Vienna 2022, hosted jointly by the International Bar Association (IBA) and the Vienna International Arbitral Centre (VIAC). CDRC Vienna was established in 2014 and has been reputed as one of the largest Alternate Dispute Resolution competitions in the globe.

Sadiyah Reyal, a second-year undergraduate of APIIT Law School participated in the mediation component of the competition and emerged as the Champion Mediator out of 11 Mediator Teams that took part at the contest. Sadiyah was coached by Mr Pascal Comvalius, a renowned mediator and author from Holland, who has contributed immensely to the development of Mediation and Negotiation in Sri Lanka and at APIIT specifically by coaching several competing Teams representing APIIT, that have performed exceptionally in international competitions.

Umar Safras, Tharuka Jayasinghe, and Nohim Abeynayake took part in the competition as a Negotiator Team, emerging as 2nd Runners Up out of 22 Negotiator Teams from all over the globe that have been competitively selected to participate at CDRC Vienna. Their highly reputed Danish coach and expert negotiator, Mr. Mikkel Gudsøe, played a vital role in supporting the team to their success and assisted them in becoming the first Sri Lankan team to rank this high in CDRC Vienna. Furthermore, Samaa Shazuli played a monumental role in the team’s success as the Team mentor.

The trophies brought home by CDRC Vienna were the third and fourth trophies won so far from mediation and negotiation competitions this year, with the initial special award won by Sadiyah Reyal and Arsiya Mahir at the 17th ICC Paris Mediation Competition 2022 and the second trophy being the championship trophy of Lex Infinitum 2022 won by Umar Safras and Tharuka Jayasinghe.

The students representing APIIT are all part of the Moot, Debate and Mock Mediation Society of APIIT, which aims to build and promote the practical and theoretical skills of students who are interested in Debating, Mooting, Mediation, and Negotiation. The training programmes and practices conducted by the society allow any student to improve their knowledge and skills in several areas of Dispute Resolution.

The developments in skill, ability and networking opportunities brought forward by the involvement in the Moot, Debate and Mock Mediation Society of APIIT Law School allows students to tap into their true potential as future experts in the field, and create pathways of opportunity in their prospective careers.
