No nutritious meals for vulnerable school children

Save the Children Sri Lanka has said the closure of schools for the past three weeks has deprived children from economically vulnerable families from receiving a decent nutritious meal every day.

The non-profit organisation said in its website that its ‘food for education’ programme implemented in 887 schools in seven chosen districts has come to a grinding halt because of the school closures. It was pointed out that this was the fourth school closure, and children have not attended schools in the past six months.

The organisation noted that schools were closed for more than 18 months during the COVID pandemic times in the past two years, and vulnerable children had been denied a decent nutritious meal.

It said a recent survey has also revealed that the economic crisis had driven 50% of families to struggle to support their children’s education and many children go hungry without having at least one meal a day. Many children had also dropped out of schools causing a huge step backwards in education.

Moreover, the Education Ministry recently assured that steps would be taken to resume the mid day meal programme that stopped because of school closures during the pandemic. This programme will resume in October, through a partnership with the World Food Programme.
