A National Fuel Pass system was announced yesterday, but implementation of the scheme may take a few more days, Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekara announced.

Hours after the registration began at fuelpass.gov.lk a large number of persons had registered.

The Minister warned that in the initial stages people would experience difficulties to log in and register as it would take a few more days to properly implement the system. Under the scheme, persons have to register with their National Identity Card number and vehicle details including the registration number and chassis number.

Only one vehicle can be registered under one NIC number, Mr Wijesekara explained.

Those possessing more than one vehicle can register using an NIC of another person in the house, while companies will be able to register vehicles under any employee’s number, he explained.

The government has not yet decided on the quota of fuel which would be made available at a time. “We will be announcing the details in the next few days,” the minister added. A diesel shipment of 40,000 mt arrived last night and will be distributed from today, while another diesel shipment of 40,000 mt is due tomorrow. Two shipments of petrol of 40,000 mt each are due between Tuesday and Wednesday and between Friday and Saturday respectively.
