Tight security around Parliament area next week

At least 50 people have been identified as those responsible for causing damages in the President’s House, Presidential Secretariat, Temple Trees, the Prime Minister’s office, for the burning of Ranil Wickremesinghe’s private residence in Colombo 05 and for causing violence near the Parliament.

A senior Police officer said required evidence, including video and Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage, has already been collected and action would be filed in the courts shortly.

One person wanted in connection of the attack on Mr Wickremesinghe’s residence has already fled the country.

However, the Police hoped to obtain a court order preventing the others leaving the country.

Meanwhile the Public Security Ministry had been ordered to provide additional security for Parliamentarians coming to vote in the new President next Wednesday.

The Ministry was directed to assess the security requirements and make arrangements for those who may be under threat, a senior official said.

“The MPs, particularly those in outstation areas, have been told to arrive in Colombo the day before the session,” the official said.

Arrangements had also been made to deploy the Special Task Force, Police, Army and the riot squad around the Parliament area a day before the session, with security checks in place to ensure only the residents were allowed into the area around Parliament.
