While Sri Lanka has gone through many challenges local companies keep reaching greater heights in bringing credit to the country.

Sri Lankan restaurant Culture Colombo was awarded the ‘Best Ethnic Restaurant in Asia’ for the year 2022 by Asia’s Number 01 Brand and Leadership Excellence Awards under the ‘Asian Dining Awards’ category.

The restaurant that was opened in 2018 as a Sri Lankan authentic restaurant has portrayed the culture of Sri Lanka through its food, both appearance and taste.

In an interview with the Mirror Magazine, the restaurant’s young CEO, Jishan Beruwalage, reiterated, “Winning this prestigious award for  Sri Lanka amidst the current economic crisis following the Easter Sunday attacks in 2019 and COVID pandemic that begun in 2020 is a milestone. Bringing glory to the country with the award is an achievement for us at Culture Colombo and we should be proud as Sri Lankans.”

“At Culture Colombo we have always depicted the culture of
Sri Lanka through food, both by its appearance and taste as well as the service we provide,” he added.

“Since the restaurant opened in 2018, we are now looking at expanding locally while also eyeing international avenues intensifying the Sri Lankan cuisine,” stated Mr Beruwalage.

The restaurant’s most popular dish among locals and foreigners is the ‘Tasting Basket’ – the basket gives a glimpse of everything Sri Lankan in one dish. Another famous dish at Culture Colombo is the ‘Bamboo Biriyani’ and ‘Mati Walanda Dry Curry Bowl’, where you can choose from crab, prawn, chicken roasted and seafood mix. “We introduce a variety of innovative dishes, most recent being the ‘Parata Rapata’,” he noted.

As a young entrepreneur and a Sri Lankan cuisine enthusiast, Mr Beruwalage started the restaurant at the age of 26 with a lot of passion for keeping the traditions of the Sri Lankan culture. The restaurant takes extra care to deliver fresh farm produce to local classy table cuisine, emphasising seasonal and locally sourced ingredients and the freshest seafood.

Culture Colombo takes pride in supporting local farm communities in Sri Lanka. The restaurant’s interior is designed to bring the Walawwa experience while dining. The Colonial space has its modern and vintage touch, inviting to a feel-at-home experience while dining.

The mural wall has harmoniously incorporated the colonial architecture style to show a cultural infusion.
