Enhancing Skills in Media- Bishop’s College Students Shine in Media Literacy

Twenty- Five senior students had a great deal of fun and fulfilment as they enhanced their knowledge and skills in media literacy. They participated in an intensive media literacy workshop, conducted on 18 and 19 June, 2022, at Rainbow Institute of Communication, Colombo. 

The participants were students of Bishop’s College, Colombo, representing the Bishop’s College Media Unit, Magazine Committee and Photography Club. They were accompanied and guided by their teachers, Mr. Shanaka Perera – Teacher- in- Charge (Media Unit) and Ms. Madusha Fernando – Teacher- in- Charge (Magazine Committee)

The Media Literacy training for students of Bishop’s College was organized by the Rainbow Institute of Communication, with the support of the American Center, of the United States Embassy in Colombo.

This workshop was part of a larger programme on media literacy for youth in ten districts in Sri Lanka, conducted by the Rainbow Institute of Communication, with the support of the American Center, of the Embassy of the United States of America.

Media Literacy-  Essential Skill for Youth

225 young leaders island wide, were awarded full scholarships for the media literacy programme.  The   training was carried out through centers in Colombo, Negombo, Kurunegala, Jaffna, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Vavuniya, Matara, Galle and   Kandy. 

As the environment both locally and globally is becoming more and more challenging and competitive for young people, media literacy has become an essential skill for  them  to go forward in their lives and careers.

The training offered by Rainbow Institute of Communication and the American Centre was   designed to upskill   bright   youth and help them understand this important topic area.

Highlights 

The training was conducted by eminent  Communication and Media academics, Dr Mahim   Mendis, Dr Thiwankee Wickramasinhe and Dr Sameera Thilakawardena and Communication Specialist, Ms Manique Mendis.

Topics included:  role and responsibility of Media in a Democracy, Media   ethics, regulation and self – regulation, with special reference to mechanisms in Sri Lanka, context sensitivity, pluralism and gender, using multiple sources, recognising fake news, hate speech and bias,  mobile  journalism and digital issues and shaping the Media as responsible youth leaders

As in all trainings conducted by the Rainbow Institute of Communication, modern international training techniques with fun- filled activity based methodology were used.

The students engaged in exciting fun activities, including designing of a newspaper, practical photography for news and production of videos using techniques of mobile journalism and story-  telling. They also engaged in public speaking.

The participants as a group, summoned up their experience thus:

“We were able to broaden our creative horizons.  It was truly enlightening for us to know about the multiple facets of media and the ethical way of presenting information . We are proud to say that we leave this workshop with a greater level of awareness and responsibility.  We are immensely grateful for the opportunity we got, to enhance our personalities to benefit our society’
