The annual Rugby ‘1st XV Jersey Presentation’ ceremony of Wesley College was recently held at the College premises, marking the significant juncture of handing over the rugby jerseys to the senior squad. Honorary chief guests, the school’s administration, old boys of the college and parents of the squad members attended this occasion.

While most rugby tournaments and championships were left to be rescheduled over the past two years due to the unfortunate events of the Covid-19 pandemic and followed by the economic crisis, the team has exerted their efforts into long hours of practice and training, to achieve their absolute best for the ongoing 2022 school rugby season.

Captain of this year’s team, Tharusha Jayaweera declared, “We are grateful to have celebrated this event to kick start the season. The team is thrilled for the upcoming matches, and we hope to deliver and make the school and everyone proud right throughout.”

With a proud history of over 148 years, Wesley College Rugby dates back to 1956. Since then the sport of rugby has grown in leaps and bounds with their most significant milestone was being crowned the Presidents Trophy Champions in 2013.  Wesley College will celebrate their 150th year in 2024.

In their first outing, Wesley recorded a resounding win against Vidyartha College by 38-7, played at the CR&FC ground in Longdon Place last Saturday. Wesley were impressive in their first game itself, causing devastation against Vidyartha, as they led the halftime by 28-0.

They scored as much as four converted tries, almost single-handedly before making at least eight changes, allowing their bench strength to taste the action in their opening game of the season.

In total, Wesley scored from six tries and four conversions, while against Vidyartha, who managed to score from a solitary converted try.
