The UCL IT Career Fair 2022 was held on a professional platform with the participation of many top-drawer IT organisations and professionals in Sri Lanka giving hope to budding talent at UCL in terms of internships and focusing on the IT Industry’s dire need of more than 10,000 professionals needed to join the IT Industry.

With the quality and calibre of the students produced at UCL it is envisioned that the young Interns of UCL could reach key positions in the future, whilst gaining valuable insights during the internship year.

Setting the pace for the event, Dr. Dhananjay Kulkarni, Dean of Academic Affairs at UCL, himself an IT expert, welcomed the representatives who had taken time off to join the UCL event, as well as the companies who joined virtually. Among the companies who attended the UCL IT Career Fair 2022 were 99X, Virtusa, John Keells IT, Axiata Digital Labs, Orel IT, Calcey Technologies, Alofa Techlabs, Bluechip Technologies Asia, Different Technologies, etc. Dialog, Brandix, IFS, Unilever IT, WSO2 and Wiley also extended their support in accepting suitably qualified students’ CVs.

He noted that UCL has a 100% record for placing students for internships and employment at reputed companies, which reflects UCL’s commitment to develop industry-ready workforce for Sri Lanka. Welcoming the august audience Dr. Dhananjay Kulkarni stated that this event was planned meticulously in advance to ensure that the students derive the best benefit. He thanked the participating companies for their valuable alliance with UCL and in turn stated that UCL was proud to offer good candidates for consideration.

“I am confident that the students will add value to each respective company, as they are technically expert, and have a slight edge in terms of soft-skills”, he opined.

Mr. Gihan Silva, CEO, stated that UCL being the premier transnational education provider in Sri Lanka follows the highest quality and stringent standards. He re-iterated that UCL has a unique portfolio of IT degrees and programmes from top ranked universities providing discerning students the choice of completing a globally recognised IT degree in Sri Lanka, UK, Canada, Australia or Malaysia. “The additional skills-development programmes we conduct at UCL enables our undergraduates to become “work-ready” with both knowledge and skills, he said.

Aligned to the themed event, Mr. Gihan Silva pointed out that Sri Lanka’s IT Industry has set ambitious goals to achieve US$ 5 Billion in export revenue and create 200,000 IT jobs, for which UCL wishes to contribute its might by producing quality IT graduates. He emphasised UCL’s ethos of “Quality over Quantity”, and the epitome of adage was one of UCL’s students who recently won the accolade of being adjudged the “Best Intern” at 99X. It is hoped that the current students will emulate Heshan Karunaratne’s outstanding feat.

Mr. Thepul Ginige, Senior Lecturer and Programme Co-ordinator highlighted the Skill Development Programme of UCL, and also spoke about the importance of creating industry exposure. He shared the details of the awards won and the presentation of research papers at international conferences by senior batches of the Software Engineering Degree Programme, and mentioned that UCL was justly proud of their achievements, some of whom had patents in the offing, which would benefit humanity.

UCL Management was very appreciative of the Industry professionals who had taken time off their busy schedules to be present at UCL to conduct the interviews face-to-face and also on-line.  All interviews are scheduled to be completed by early August allowing UCL students to blend into the dynamic world of IT as soon as possible.
