Dalada Perahera opens to public after 2 years, 6000 police to provide security

After two years the Kandy Dalada Maligawa authorties have decided to allow the public to view the annual Esala perahera.

Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (Central ) Sanjeewa Dharmaratne said about 6000 Police personnel would be deployed to provide additional security during the perahera period.

The rituals connected with the perahera will begin with the traditional “Kap” planting ceremonies at the four Devales on July 29 at 03.03a.m. The “Kap” would be brought from Aluthnuwara on the 28th evening and distributed to the Devales –Vishnu, Kataragama, Natha and Paththini.

The first Kumbal Perahera will take to the streets on August 2 at the auspicious time of 06.01 p.m. Making an official announcement regarding the perahera on Wednesday evening at the Dalada Maligawa auditorium complex, Diyawadana Nilama Pradeep Nilanga Dela said the perahera will proceed along Dalada Veediya, D.S.Sennayake Vediya and turn on to Pansala Para, Deva Veediya, Colombo street, Yatinuwara Veediya , Raja Veediya and proceed to the Sri Dalada Maligawa and the Devales. The kumbal Perahera will conclude on August 6 and the Randoli Perahera will begin on August 7 and the final night of the Perahera will be August 11.

The Day Perahera will be held on August 12 and the traditional water cutting ceremony will be held in Getambe in the early hours of the day.
