Local onion farmers to the rescue

View(s):

Local onion cultivators who discontinued farming have resumed farming as a measure to reduce the need for importing big onions.
They pointed out that if the government extended support to them they could meet local demand and reduce foreign currency expenditure.

The farmers pointed out they are ready to play their part to support the economy but that State authorities need to back them up with fuel, pesticides, weedicides and fertiliser.

Farmers from Dambulla, Ibankatuwa, Nawagashinna, Ulluketawewa, Anakatawa, Wewalawewa and Sigiriya resumed farming recently.
They explained that some traders were selling pesticides, weedicides and chemical fertiliser, brought into the country furtively, at high prices. The farmers, therefore, request that the government put an end to the black market mafia controlling these items.
