‘The Gypsies’, one of the most popular and successful musical outfits in the Sri Lankan music history, will hit the road again with their brand new Sinhala song ‘Sunil Aiya Yanna Giye Eyi?’ under the new leadership of Piyal Perera.

‘This is the very first song to be released by the band without Sunil’s voice. We are fine-tuning the new song and the audio track of ‘Sunil Aiya Yanna Giye Eyi?’ will hit the web and the radio airwaves soon’ said Piyal.

The idea of the song and the melody are by Suresh De Silva, while the lyrics were penned by Chandradasa Fernando, who wrote lyrics for most of the top hits sung by late Sunil Perera. Music composition, mixing and mastering was done by Dushan Jayathilake of Gypsies at ‘Gypsies Studio’.

Main vocal parts are handled by Piyal Perera and Nalin Samath supported by some of the top singers in the music scene. Nalin Perera of ‘Marians’, Lanthra Perera of ‘Doctor’, Chandumal Fernando of ‘C Plus’, Nifal and Ashane of Infinity, Tehan of ‘Hot Chocolate’ rendered their voice to the song.

Meanwhile the single ‘Gaalu Paara’ the last song sung by Sunil Perera with Gypsies is now a popular hit at most of their concerts. The ‘Gaalu Paara’ video is still under production at the studio.

‘The new video of ‘Gaalu Paara’ will feature all animated characters of the members of the Gypsies including Sunil Aiya’ Piyal explained about their new venture.

This song is in the line with his usually catchy baila beat and it will be the very first animated song created by Gypsies, probably the first locally produced animated song in Sri Lanka.

The band was planning to host a mega concert in 2021 to celebrate their fiftieth year in the music scene. Due to pandemic situation in the country the ‘Golden Jubilee Concert’ was postponed and later it was shelved with the untimely death of Sunil.

‘New Gypsies’ now led by brother Piyal and is back in the saddle again with many dances, weddings, gigs and other events.

The present line-up comprises Piyal Perera (leader/vocals), Kamal Perera (guitar), Lal Witiwala (drums), Dushan Jayathileke (keyboards/ vocals), Ranga Perera (bass), Nalin Samath (guitar) and Monique Pallegama on vocals.
