Sumana Amarasinghe, veteran actress and film producer passed away last week. She was 73 years old at the time of her death.

According to her family, she passed away while receiving treatment at the Sri Jayewardenepura Hospital following a heart attack.

Born on 21 February 1948 in Katugastota, Kandy, Amarasinghe started her acting career on the school stage, won the first place in the Avurudu Kumari competition held in Dehiwala in 1964 and was crowned as ‘Lassana Muhuna’ in a competition in 1965.

She entered the film industry with the film PipenaKumudu directed by Ruby de Mel. She became famous for her films ‘Sunethra’, ‘SukiriKella’ and ‘ObaiMamai’.

Amarasinghe acted in many films and won the Most Popular Actress award on several occasions, in addition to producing six films.

She was preceded in death by her husband veteran Sri Lankan actor and film director Roy de Silva.
