Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) Leader Senthil Thondaman is going to take legal action against plantation companies which do not comply with the Cabinet decision to increase wages of tea estate workers.

Plantation workers are facing severe hardships owing to the skyrocketing cost of living brought on by the economic crisis, he said. Even though the Cabinet had earlier taken a decision to increase wages of the workers, the decision must be implemented through a directive from the Labour Commissioner General. However, that directive has not been implemented, Mr. Thondaman told the Sunday Times.

Since high grown tea had fetched a high price at the Colombo Tea Auction during the past two months, the companies should consider the situation of the workers and consider increasing their wages, the CWC leader said.

He also said 40,000 metric tonnes of food items donated by the Tamil Nadu government would be distributed throughout the island. Only 9000 metric tonnes arrived this week and the other 31,000 metric tonnes were expected to arrive in the island by the end of this month, Mr. Thondaman said.
