Residents and fishing community of Iranawila in Puttalam express concerns about rapid coastal erosion in the area.

Fishermen complain that the beach erosion has affected them negatively as they cannot even use the beach to drag or push boats into the water as the beach is becoming non-existent.

The people also expressed concern that the Wennappuwa-Chilaw Road, which extends along the coastline, too is at risk due to the sea erosion.

Deveon Deepatha, a fisherman residing in the area, said that he cannot use the beach for fishing activities as there is no beach left to push or pull his boat to the sea.

He complained that no one has paid attention or taken action to stop the sea erosion in the area.

Ayesha Samanthi, a short-eats seller, who operates at a small wooden kiosk by the beachside, said that she is inconvenienced as both her shop and her home are at risk of being washed away due to sea erosion.

She added that she is unable to comprehend what measures should be taken to protect them.

Puttalam District Secretary H M S P Herath said that they have commenced adding boulder walls along the beach, as well as use of Jumbo bags, to stop coastal erosion with the support of the Coast Conservation Department.

He added that they are carrying out coast preservation activities at the areas seriously affected.
