More heavy rain and strong winds are expected as the South West monsoon hangs heavily over the island, but floods are gradually subsiding, Meteorology Department Director General Athula Karunanayake said yesterday.

He said the rain had eased somewhat, although it was expected to intensify again from tomorrow. In the beginning of the second week of this month, the weather pattern might change and heavy showers would lessen.

The weather chief said several areas would experience intermittent showers at times in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle and Matara districts.

Several spells of showers would occur in the North Western province also. Showers or thundershowers would occur at a few places inthe Uva province and in Ampara district during the evening or night.

The people had been requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thunderstorms.

Moreover, the flood waters had receded across the country, said the Disaster Management Centre’s Assistant Director Pradeep Kodippili.

He said most of the flood affected people had returned to their homes since Friday when the water levels started going down.

In seven districts, about 22,388 people from 5,357 families were left in hardship and more than 150 houses were damaged mostly in the Ratnapura, Kegalle, Matara and Colombo districts.

One unfortunate death had also been reported. The victim was a relief officer who was on duty in the Kiriella area and he was caught in the floods on his way back.

Another had been injured due to floods, the DMC reported. The worst affected district was Ratnapura, where 2577 people from 697 families, were hit by the floods.
