Medicine is one of the most popular higher education choices among students and entries to medical schools are very competitive anywhere in the world. Entering state medical colleges in Sri Lanka is extremely difficult and only the students who take government A/L are usually eligible to enter these universities. As a result hundreds of students apply to medical schools abroad and the popular destinations are USA and UK. Students who may not able to afford USA or UK select universities in China, Russia, Malaysia and India for their medical studies. Though the course fee may be a little less, studying in these second tier locations largely limit their career options as most have to return to Sri Lanka and face the licensing examinations known to have very low pass rates.

Advantage of studying medicine in USA or UK is not only the prestige or the recognition of the qualification. Most who qualify in these countries get opportunities to work in USA, Canada, UK, European Union and Middle East. As a result most parents prefer to send their children to USA or UK for medical studies irrespective of high course fees. Most medical graduates of these universities find work opportunities in these countries itself and it is no secret that the salaries and perks for medical doctors are very high in these parts of the world. Therefore ones who prefer rewarding career opportunities, secure future and prosperous lives always try to get access to medical schools in US and UK.

Though the demands for these dest inations are high, the current economic crisis in Sri Lanka that has led to very high exchange rates have almost doubled the cost a student has to spend for a medical degree.

Pre Med programmes are very popular in most countries as they provide an economical, expedited and an accredited path to medical schools. Students are able to enter the Pre Med programme after O/L and are able to complete their programme and enter the pre-clinical stage of the medical degree in two years. This pathway saves up to three years that other students take to do A/L and large sums of money spent for education during those 3 years. Most importantly this pathway enables students to complete their MD within 6.5 years, when they are around 23 years. Completing a medical degree at around 23-24 years of age will lead to an excellent professional and personal future for these individuals.

One key restriction for the Pre-Med programmes was that they were expensive programmes. CIIHE Faculty of Health & Life Sciences recently entered in to an agreement with the American International University in Antigua to launch a Pre-Med programme for Sri Lankan students. This allows Sri Lankan students to complete the Pre Med program in Sri Lanka saving around 15 Million in total for the two years they are studying here.

Upon completing the pre-Med programme they will be entering AUA in Antigua where they will study the Pre Clinicals and completing the USMLE 1. After passing USMLE 1, their Clinicals could be done in one of the partner hospitals of AUA in USA, Canada, UK or India.

AUA School of Medicine is an excellent medical school with a 92% first pass rate at USMLE. MD degree awarded by AUA is recognized by Medicap boards in US, UK, India, Canada and many other countries.

More information about AUA could be obtained from their website.

CIIHE –AUA Pre Medicine programme will launch its first intake in June and is open for students who have just completed O/L as well. Considering that SLMC requires individuals who wish to practice in Sri Lanka to possess A/L’s, anyone who wishes to meet SLMC requirements could take A/L while they are in the Pre Med Programme.

CIIHE has arranged a faculty including lecturers form state medical colleges, consultants from State and Private hospitals to deliver the medical related subjects of the program in order to ensure the quality of the programme.

Programme is conducted under the direct supervision of Dr. Manori Samarasinghe, guided by Prof. Anil Gunathilake, Honorary Executive Dean of CIIHE Faculty of Health & Life Sciences.

CIIHE encourages students to take an informed decision and therefore they invite interested students to visit the campus and meet with the lecturers and student advisors to clarify their doubts and obtain all the information they need. You could make an appointment by calling.
