More than 8000 people affected by adverse weather

The Southwest monsoon that has now set in has resulted in adverse weather conditions in many parts of the country, while strong winds and thuderstorms have been forecast.

Strong winds about (40-50 kmph) can be expected over the western slope of the central hills, Northern, North Central and North-Western provinces and in Hambantota and Trincomalee districts, the Meteorology Department warns.

Thunderstorms with gusty winds have also been forecast for the weekend.

Rains have been pounding several districts since last week and many houses, paddy fields and roads have been inundated, the Disaster Management Centre said.

Rough seas are predicted with wind speed increasing up to 50-60 kmph in the sea area extending from Puttalam to Trincomalee via Kankesanturai and Hambantota to Pottuvil. Wind speed could increase up to 50 km at times in other coastal areas of the country too. The Meteorology Department has requested the fishing community and navy personnel to be attentive to forecasts issued in this regard

Maximum rainfall of 50 mm was recorded from Ayagama in the Ratnapura district.

The Disaster Management Centre said 8917 people from 2256 families have been affected by adverse weather conditions particularly in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Northern Southern and North Western provinces.

One death has also been reported from the Jaffna district and 370 houses have been partially damaged due to heavy winds.

The Navy troops has been deployed in several areas of the Western and Southern Provinces to provide relief to the people.

Navy relief teams are in operation in Ratnapura, and in Bulathsinhala and Paragoda in the Kalutara district. Navy relief teams are also assisting people affected by floods in Thawalama and Nagoda in Galle. The Western Naval Command, Southern Naval Command and the Northwestern Naval Command have also kept relief teams on standby to assist people who maybe affected by possible floods in coming days.

The National Building Research Organisation’s senior scientist Dr.Wasantha Senadeera said level two warning has been issued to many divisional secretariats of the Ratnapura district. They include Openayake, Kahawatta, Elapatha, Ayagama, Ratnapura, Pelmadulla, Kalawana, Godakawela, Kuruwita, Nivithigala, Kiriella, Kolonna, Imbulpe, Balangoda and Eheliyagoda Divisional secretariats.

Level one warning has been issued to divisional secretariats of Nuwara Eliya, Kotmale and Ambagamuwa.

The Irrigation Department says water levels in major reservoirs have risen by more than 70 percent, adding that the existing water capacity is sufficient for the upcoming Yala season.
