Pathway students connect with Deakin University

Deakin University Australia offers Sri Lankan students an avenue to make a start in Sri Lankan via pathways, and then transfer to the University, later.

The University coordinated a workshop which brought together students currently on a pathway in Sri Lanka, Deakin alumni and staff to inform, and discuss opportunities that await them in Australia.

The event was held on the 30th of March 2022 at Cinnamon Grand Colombo and was attended by students from the Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology (APIIT), Royal Institute of Colombo (RIC), Sri Lanka Technological Campus (SLTC), National Institute of Business and Technology (NIBM) and CICRA Campus. Staff from these institutions also attended the event.

During the workshop, students had the opportunity to talk to alumni about their respective experiences at Deakin University. The students also had the chance to ask any questions from the Deakin University staff that was present at the event.

Naveen Henakankanamage – who had just graduated from Deakin and had commenced his studies via a pathway via RIC had this to say, “The “Connect with Deakin” event was a fantastic platform to share my experience, the do’s and don’ts and general knowledge about studying at Deakin and living in Australia. It also allowed us to network amongst ourselves. I firmly believe that it helped the attendees to form a clearer picture of what to expect, and how to embrace day to day life in Australia and importantly how to make the most of their academic learning. Plus of course travelling in Australia during their time in the country. Personally, this event gave me the opportunity to share my experiences with those embarking on this journey and I hope it will help them to achieve their goals and ambitions”.

The University is committed to dedicated in-country partnerships with leading Sri Lankan higher education providers, in both the private and public sector, for undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. Many of these partnerships are Recognition for Prior learning (RPL) arrangements, where Deakin University’s provides credits (exemptions) for prior study. This allows these students to transfer (with credit) to Deakin University, part way through a course, to complete their degree.

Starting university via a pathway allows for students to explore and begin to learn independently, without being thrown “into the deep end”, having to manage and juggle several aspects of study, living abroad, and adulthood, all at once. It is natural for parents to worry about their child’s coping abilities and security, especially when embarking on study in a foreign country. As many international school students leave school at the tender ages of 16 or 17, one or two years at a Deakin partner institute in Sri Lanka allows time for young students to emotionally mature, and receive higher education exposure locally, before navigating abroad on their own. This can greatly reduce the stress and worry for both students and their parents. When asked about what students could expect once they arrive in Australia, Bri Gunn-International Manager, Deakin International said “They will be doing a lot of practical learning, plus industry engagement during their studies and they can also expect a lot of fun. We want them to have a well-rounded academic experience but also make the most of the social setting that is part of university life. We have a lot of different sports and cultural clubs that they can join and be a part of.

Deakin University has been ranked the number one for the past 12 years in a row in Victoria and student satisfaction is of utmost importance to us. That’s the ranking that we’re proud of because that is what the students are telling us. In Millennial terms we’ve also noticed students calling our university the ‘vibe’. They just really love to be on campus, the lecturers are friendly and of course we have a massive student support system. Also, Melbourne and Victoria in general has a large Sri Lankan diaspora so they will feel right at home there!’

Dr Hasalie Perea at Head of Business School at APIIT said “We’ve been working with Deakin University for a long time and we renewed the partnership last year. I would recommend doing the Deakin Pathway Programme because a lot of people are looking for opportunities to pursue their education overseas and the cost too is a lot less if you were to start here and then transfer.

Deakin University is a household name in Sri Lankan and is a highly reputed University around the globe as well.
