India’s premier Educational Institution, Indian Institute of Technology Madras is inviting applications from students for BSc in Programming and Data Science

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), ranked No.1 in India Rankings 2021 by NIRF, is inviting applications from the students of Sri lanka to apply for the world’s first BSc degree in Programming and Data Science.

Anyone who is completing Class XII and XIII and studied English and Math in Class XI, can apply for the May 2022 Term qualifier exam. Students in class XII and class XIII can gain admission and join the programme after completing their class XIII. The classes for the next qualifier batch will commence in May 2022.

Data Science is one of the fastest growing sectors that is predicted to create 11.5 million jobs by 2026. This unique programme will be offered in three different stages; Foundational Level, Diploma level, Degree level. Applicants are invited irrespective of their geographic location, academic background, and profession.

Highlighting the changes in the application process, Prof. Andrew Thangaraj, Professor In-Charge, BSc in Programming and Data Science, IIT Madras, said, “Through this program, we wish to ensure that high-quality education is accessible to anyone who dreams to study at an IIT or build a career in Programming and Data Science. This programme, we hope, will be a game changer in the field of education paving the way for many other large scale programmes to be offered by us and other institutes.”

More than 60,000 applications have been received for the BSc qualifier process so far and currently, more than 12,500 students from various countries are pursuing the BSc programme. The diversity of the learners in the program in terms of student age (18-76 yrs), role (students from different educational backgrounds – commerce, arts, science, engineering, management, medicine and law, among others, working professionalas from different industry sectors) and learners being from more than 25 countries is one of the highlights of the programme.

Further, Dr. Vignesh Muthuvijayan, Professor In-Charge, BSc in Programming and Data Science, IIT Madras, said, “The BSc Programme opens the door to the world of data science and programming where the demand for skilled resources is very high for anyone from any background and of any age group. This tailor-made programme now admits international students from different countries, giving everyone access to the IIT education.

The programme is highly flexible keeping the convenience of the learner in mind, where weekly content is released on a portal for anytime access, while  all examinations have to be attended in person at designated centres in Colombo and Jaffna, which ensures credibility of the learning.. IIT Madras is working with Spectrum Institute of Science & Technology to conduct in-person exams in Sri Lanka. The application process includes four weeks of training, which includes video lectures, weekly assignments, discussion forum and live interactions with professors and course instructors. Applicants have to write the qualifier examination in person which is based only on these 4 weeks of content and if they get more than the minimum cutoff, they can join the foundation level of the BSc in Programming and Data Science. The qualifier exam can be written in one of the exam centers in
Sri Lanka.
