The Education Ministry plans to recruit 22,000 new graduate teachers to national and provincial schools within the next three months. Applications have already been called from interested applicants, a senior Education Ministry official said.

There are currently 51,000 graduate teachers shortlisted for Government teacher appointments. About 31,000 of these have so far applied for the advertisement to recruit the 22,000 teachers. The new graduate teachers will be recruited from graduate appointments given in 2018, 2019 and 2020.

The teacher vacancies are due to the Government’s plans to upgrade a further 832 schools to national school status. A national school needs more teachers in line with its upgraded status. Consequently, teacher shortages could occur in provincial schools due to more teachers being recruited to national schools.

The newly recruited teachers will teach GCE Advanced Level classes, the official said. Most teachers will be recruited to teach core subjects such as math, physics and chemistry. Teachers will also be recruited to teacher other subjects such as Information Technology (IT) Cabinet approval has already been granted for the recruitments.

They will be recruited in a manner that does not violate the current Teacher Service Minute, the official said.

Meanwhile, the Education Ministry is also planning to introduce an online transfer system for teachers. Some schools have a severe shortage of teachers while others have an excess of teachers in some subjects, the ministry official noted.

No schools will be allowed to have an excess of teachers once the new system is introduced. They will be transferred via the online process, the official said.

Recruitments will be completed within the next three months. The recruited teachers must work at the schools they have been assigned to for ten years.
