Youngsters shine at SSC Open Tennis

Youngsters came on top at the recently concluded SSC Open Tennis Championship with school players Thehan Wijemanne and Anjalika Kurera continuing their supremacy as Men’s Open and Women’s Open champions at the three-week long tournament that took place at the SSC courts.

Thehan, still 17 and a student of Royal College, Colombo, won the Men’s Open title, adding another feather to his title cap.

Anjalika, currently the best women’s tennis player of the country, claimed her third major title in a span of months, claiming the Women’s Open title. The 17-year-old is a student of Ave Maria Convent, Negombo.

Among other youngsters who stole the limelight in the tournament are Kiran Vairavanathan and Dinara de Silva, who clinched the Singles titles in Boy’s and Girls categories respectively of the Under-18 age group. Kiran is a student of British School in Colombo while Dinara is from St. Bridget’s Convent.

Thehan’s younger brother, Methwan Wijemanne, also of Royal College, won the Boy’s Under-16 Singles title, while Ruvi Lewkebandara of Gateway College, Colombo, won the Singles title of the same age category for Girls.

Ananda College’s Lithum Jayabandu clinched the Boy’s Under-14 Singles title while Oneli Samarawickrama of Newstead College, Negombo, won the Girls Singles title of the same age category.
