Vaccination of children

Here are the highlights of Friday’s media briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau (HPB).

HPB Director Dr. Ranjith Batuwanthudawe:

Children above 12 years of age are being given the 1st dose of the vaccine and those above 16 years of age will be given the 2nd dose if three months have elapsed since the 1st.

Consultant Virologist Dr. Nadeeka Janage of the Medical Research Institute (MRI):

To control the spread of the virus, we need to continue the vaccination programme. So far, 50% of the target group has received the booster – this shows that another 50% has not received their jab yet.

Consultant Paediatrician Dr. Hasitha Liyanarachchi of the Lady Ridgeway Hospital (LRH) for Children:

Now around 40-50 children are receiving treatment at LRH for COVID-19. The impact of COVID on healthy children is minimal. But we shouldn’t take this lightly because over the past two weeks around five children who were in the ICU have succumbed to the virus. Four of them had comorbid conditions.

If a child has a comorbid condition affecting the lungs, kidneys or the heart, the impact of COVID is severe. It is critical to vaccinate children with comorbid conditions.
