Amendments to the Quality Assurance Bill will be moved during the committee stage at Parliament regarding the composition of the committee’s members, an official of the Education Ministry said.

Under the existing bill of the 15 members to the committee, nine members can be appointed by the Education Minister, but in view of opposition from university lecturers and other groups who claim that the appointments could be politically influenced, the composition will be changed.

The bill was prepared about three years back, but was not tabled in Parliament, the official added.

The bill will ensure that non-state universities will not be affected. One of the concerns of the non-state universities has been that the Quality Assurance bill will affect their rankings.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) last week said it plans to request the Government to give it back powers to regulate non-State universities.
