Garbage will continue to be a cause of concern for those residing in Colombo city next week due to further delays in garbage collection.

Colombo Municipal Council Director Engineering (Solid Waste Management), K Ramesh, said a Covid-19 outbreak at the Kerawalapitiya waste power plant had caused the delay in collection.

“Several plant operators tested positive for Covid-19 and were quarantined. We were told that the engineers have recovered, and PCR tests are being conducted,” he said.

The daily collection of waste in Colombo is around 500 metric tons per day.

“Due to the delay, we were told to send about 100 metric tons per day for about 10 days until the backlog is cleared,” he said.

“We had no way of disposing garbage, and having organic waste for over a week inside the house was extremely difficult,” complained Dharshika Dias, a housewife from Kirulapone.

Another resident from Colombo said he found garbage thrown across the street by passing motorists.

“There is no collecting schedule or time. With no one collecting household garbage people are compelled to keep the stinking garbage within their houses or leave outdoors attracting rats and stray animals,” he said.
