The Navam Maha Perahera of the Hunupitiya Gangaramaya Temple has a distinct place among the Buddhist festivals in the country.

The Gangaramaya Raja Maha Viharaya in Colombo holds the Navam Maha Perahera as a two-day event every February to commemorate one of Buddhism’s most prestigious historical events.

The Buddha’s first sermon, Dhamma Chakka Pavattana Sutta, refers to the turning of the wheel of righteousness. The beginning of the Buddha’s first sermon at Isipatana provided the impetus for this annual spectacle.

The pageant was previously known as Kolamba Perahera since it is the only pageant that parades through Colombo’s streets. Because the pageant takes place within the city limits of Colombo, many spectators, including tourists, flock to see it.

Former Prime Minister R Premadasa provided State backing for the pageant, which began in 1979. This Perahera has a large number of participants who work together to make the pageant magnificent.

The 44th edition of the Navam Maha Perahera concluded last Wednesday (16).
