Three teams led by an Assistant Superintendent of Police are investigating the attack on the house of prominent television and social media journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrema, however, the suspects are yet to be identified.

Police Media Spokesman SSP Nihal Talduwa told the Sunday Times they had recorded more than 25 statements regarding the attack, the most recent being a four-hour long statement from Ape Jana Bala party leader Saman Prasanna Perera who had taken part in an interview conducted by Mr. Samarawickrema on his YouTube channel.

“The three teams are conducting further technical investigations to identify the suspects and to trace the vehicles they came in,” the police spokesman said.

Police also obtained an order from the Kesbewa Magistrate’s Court on Friday to track signals from telecommunication towers, SSP Talduwa said.

Meanwhile following a request by Mr. Samarawickrema’s lawyer Kuvera de Zoysa the Kesbewa Magistrates court has ordered the Police to provide police protection to Mr. Samarawickrema.

The TV presentator had earlier claimed that despite the attack he had not been given protection and that he was fearful for the safety of his family and himself.

He also said police should not ignore the Facebook post made by ASP Sachitra Adheesha, son of Public Security Minister Rear Admiral Sarath Weerasekara.

“Police had questioned a number of people for making media remarks and posting comments on social media. A statement from the ASP in question should also be recorded,” Mr. Samarawickrema added.

ASP Weerasekara’s FB post had said those who carried out the attack had insulted rocks and feces by throwing them at Mr. Samarawickrema’s house.

Mr. Samarawickrema said he had provided 22 CCTV video footage obtained from the cameras installed at his home in Piliyandala.

Police said they have studied over 80 CCTV camera footage and some have been sent to Moratuwa University for additional analysis.
