The 46th Convocation of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ) was held from 28th- 30th December 2021 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall, where over 3000 graduands were conferred with Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD degrees. This convocation, which was due to be held in September 2020, was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, despite the many challenges posed by COVID-19, the convocation was held with immense support from the staff, adhering to all health guidelines.

Guided by the vision, “Prosper lives through education” and mission, “Develop globally competent citizens through our education for a sustainable future, drawing inspirations from our cultural heritage and wisdom”, the University strives to produce graduates who are well rounded with knowledge, experience and soft skills.

USJ is the largest university in Sri Lanka in terms of undergraduate population providing quality tertiary education to more than 13,000 undergraduates. It currently has nine faculties with the newest addition being the Faculty of Dental Sciences, the second Dental Sciences Faculty in Sri Lanka. The University stems from the Vidyodaya Pirivena established in 1873 by the Most Ven. Hikkaduwa Sri Sumangala Nayake Thero in Maligakanda. It was later granted University status and was established as the Vidyodaya University of Ceylon in 1959 with Most Ven. Weliwitiye Sri Soratha Nayake Thero as the founder Vice-Chancellor.

Under the leadership and vision of the Vice-Chancellor, Senior Prof. Sudantha Liyanage, USJ has experienced success and progress over the last two years in the development of infrastructure, opening of two new faculties and conducting research on timely topics. USJ has rallied round in the nation’s hour of need by conducting extensive research on the COVID-19 virus and by conducting regular PCR tests. Apart from COVID-19 research, USJ also undertakes research on timely topics such as dengue, water quality and robotics to name a few. USJ is also equipped with the necessary infrastructure and the capabilities to provide a quality education experience for students in Sri Lanka. A recent example is the establishment of the Faculty of Technology with a state-of-the-art faculty complex, which is the first ever Technology Faculty in Sri Lanka. Furthermore, USJ promotes extracurricular activities such as sports and provides facilities for students to excel in the sports arena.

Drawing inspiration from our heritage, USJ stands out as an institution that places importance on quality whilst striving to produce top notch graduates who are equipped to serve Mother Lanka.
