Here are the highlights of Friday’s media briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau chaired by Director Dr. Ranjith Batuwanthudawe.

Clinical Technical Lead of the Home-based Care System and Consultant Family Physician, Dr. Malkanthi Galhena said that there is an increase in COVID-19 patients seeking home-based care.

  • The highest number of cases was reported on January 27. Over the past two weeks, from January 17 onwards there has been a spike in cases, with around 930 patients being reported on January 26.
  • Currently, 6,423 patients are receiving medical treatment.
  • Since the beginning of the pandemic, of the 600,000 patients, 139,870 have been managed in the home-care setting.
  • Consultant Physician Dr. Upul Dissanayake of the National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL):
  • There is a spike in the number of COVID-19 patients at NHSL but they have sought admission due to other conditions such as heart attacks. Of the few who have sought treatment for COVID-19, many have not got the vaccine.
  • If Omicron spreads rapidly there will be more patients. Therefore, it is important to get the booster and adhere to the health guidelines such as wearing face-masks, maintaining physical distancing and hand-washing, etc.
  • The Omicron wave has started and we are witnessing the ‘tsunami’ phase. Once in the community, it will spread rapidly and we hope it will end soon. I feel that the virus has spread more than what is being seen in the statistics. Those who catch it do not test themselves anymore or get admitted to hospital.
