The latest ‘exit strategy’ released by the Director-General of Health Services, Dr. Asela Gunawardena for COVID-19 infected and their contacts.

COVID-19 patients

If admitted to a Treatment Facility – If he/she has improved from mild/moderate symptoms and is fever free for 48 hrs without antipyretics (which reduce fever), he/she can be released from isolation after 7 days from the date of the Rapid Antigen Test (RAT)/RT-PCR positivity (or from the date of the onset of symptoms). An exit RT-PCR or RAT is not required.

If under the Home-Care Management System – If he/she hasimproved from mild/moderate symptoms and is fever free for 48hrs without antipyretics, he/she can be released from home isolation after 7 days from the date of RAT/RT-PCR positivity (or from the date of the onset of symptoms). An exit RT-PCR or RAT is not required.

If the person’s mild/moderate symptoms and fever have not improved after 48hrs, he/she should contact the Medical Officer of Health (MOH) of the area for medical advice on further management.

Close contacts of COVID-19 patients

If fully vaccinated – A close contact who is fully vaccinated will not be quarantined if he/she does not have symptoms of COVID-19. He/she can continue to work, if employed. However, if he/she develops COVID-19 symptoms, he/she should undergo a RAT/RT-PCR.

What fully-vaccinated means:

n 20 years and above – should have taken two doses of a recommended COVID-19 vaccine and completed 2 weeks after the second dose. The fully vaccinated status will be valid until 3 months from the second dose. After 3 months of the second dose, the person is not considered fully vaccinated if the booster has not been taken.

n If a person in this category (20 years and above) gets infected with COVID-19 after being vaccinated with two doses of the vaccine, the booster dose can be administered after 1 month of infection, provided he/she has completed 3 months after the second dose. They should be considered as fully vaccinated with the booster dose.

n Children in the age group 16-19 years – should have taken two doses and completed 2 weeks after the second dose.

n Children in the age group 12-15 years – should have taken a single dose and completed two weeks after the single dose.

If partially vaccinated or unvaccinated – A close contact who is partially vaccinated or unvaccinated can be released from home quarantine after the completion of 7 days from the date of RAT/RT-PCR positivity (or from the date of the onset of symptoms). If he/she develops COVID-19 symptoms during the quarantine period, he/she should undergo a RAT/RT-PCR. If the RAT/RT-PCR is positive, the MOH of the area should be informed.
