Government agency heads get strict orders on vehicles

The Finance Ministry has instructed the heads of all Government agencies to take immediate measures to dispose of vehicles not in running condition and repair vehicles that can be repaired economically.

Issuing a circular, Treasury Secretary S. R. Attygalle said the Cabinet has observed that the progress of the repair and use or disposal of vehicles not in running condition is not satisfactory despite instructions given by the Assets Management Circular issued on October 2, 2020, following instructions by the Cabinet.

The Ministry said proper utilisation and timely repair and use or disposal of vehicles was needed to “prevent ruination of public properties and loss of revenue for the Government.”

Accordingly, it had instructed Government agency heads who had not yet disposed vehicles that were not in running condition and whose repairs were “uneconomical,” to do so immediately. They had also been instructed to expedite the repair of vehicles whose repairs were economical.

“It is reported that Government agencies still own a large number of vehicles to be repaired and disposed, since the respective Government agencies have delayed to take appropriate measures to repair and use or dispose of such vehicles, despite the required instructions given by the circulars,” the latest circular notes.

All Government agency heads had been instructed to provide details of vehicles under them that had been either disposed of or repaired, to the Comptroller General’s Office before April 30. The information would then be sent to the Cabinet.
