Sri Lankans among World’s Top 2% of Scientists and Researchers

Twenty for Sri Lankan scientists and researchers have entered the World’s Top 2% of Scientists in the 2020 list of outstanding researchers compiled by Stanford University in the USA.

Prof. Neelika Malavige, the Head of the Immunology and Molecular Medicine Department at the Sri Jayewardenepura University, was also selected as a member of the World Health Organisation’s technical advisory committee on COVID-19 this week.

The Lankan based researchers named in the list represent the Universities of Colombo, Sri Jayewardenepura, Peradeniya, Rajarata, Wayamba, Kelaniya and Jaffna and the International Water Management Institute, with Prof. Meththika Vithanage of Sri Jayewardenepura University leading the researchers based here.

Sri Lanka, Prof. Janaka Ekanayake from the University of Peradeniya, Prof. Anoma Chandrasekare from Wayamba University, Dr. Anushka Rajapaksa of the Sri Jayewardenepura University, Prof. Senaka Rajapaksa from the Colombo University, Prof.Chandrasekera Dissanayake from the University of Peradeniya , Prof. S.A.M.Kularatne of Peradeniya University, Prof. Nilanthi De Silva from Kelaniya University’s Medical Faculty, Prof. ChannaJayasumana of Rajarata University’s Faculty of Medicine, Prof. H.J. de Silva from the University of Kelaniya, Dr. Niranjan Rajapaksa from the University of Peradeniya, Prof. Anuradhani Kasturiratnefrom Kelaniya University’s Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Ranjan Ramasamy of the University of Jaffna and Dr. Eresha Mendis from the University of Peradeniya are among the top 2% of scientists.

Moreover, Emeritus Professor Kamini Mendis from the University of Colombo, Senior Professor Nimal Senanayake from the University of Peradeniya, Prof. Suneth Agampodi from the Rajarata University, Prof. Saroj Jayasinghe from the University of Colombo, Senior Professor Nadira Karunaweera from the University of Colombo’s Faculty of Medicine, Senior Professor H.Asita de Silva from the University of Kelaniya and Prof. Sachith Meththananda from the University of Kelaniya’s Department of Paediatrics are alsoincluded in the University of Stanford’s list of top scientists.

Stanford University, together with publishing house Elsevier and SciTech Strategies compiled the list based on updated data analysed by Jeroen Baas, Kevin Boyack and John P. A. Ioannidis of Stanford University, using a publicly available database with more than 100,000 top-scientists. (NF)
