No NICs for some O/L students, teachers refusing to take up admin work

With teachers and principals who returned to schools continuing their protests, several children sitting the 2021 Ordinary Level (O/L) exams have not yet applied for their National Identity Cards.

An official from the Department of Registrar of Persons said last week that identity cards have been issue donly to around 60% of students sitting the 2021 exams.

The department issues around 325,000 National Identity Cards every year for students sitting the O/L exams.

Meanwhile teachers who are on a work to rule campaign demanding a revision on their salary anomalies said they will boycott all administrative work including applying for NIC s for students.

“We will work only from 7.30 am to 1.00 pm and will not participate in administrative work,” Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) General Secretary Joseph Stalin said.

The 2021 O/L exams have been scheduled to be held fromFebruary 21 to March 3, 2022. – CC
