Music and fashion take centre stage

The first mainstream music video by Soundarie David Rodrigo for her song ‘Complicated’ was released on Thursday (April 1), launching the ‘Composed by odel.lk’ initiative.
Odel.lk the e-commerce portal of one of Sri Lanka’s biggest retailers, is promoting its upcoming collections whilst partnering with artists to collaborate on videos that would help the artists bring out their art.
Chief Operating Officer – E Commerce at Softlogic Holdings PLC, Nuwan Widyapathige explains that the ‘Composed’ initiative was created to collaborate and uplift artists while integrating the Odel brand seamlessly on a platform that would “weave two art forms together and bring something entertaining and of value to the viewers”.
The platform will not be restricted to just music but feature various art forms, he said.
“I think the whole ‘Composed by odel.lk’ is a great platform for artists and when I say artists, I don’t mean just musicians, but it could also include visual and the performing arts, sculpture, paintings, etc, because it is not easy being an artist, when you are sometimes lost in your own world of creativity, and there is no support to take it out there,” Soundarie said.
Shehara Liyanage and Hirushi Jayasena
Her music video for ‘Complicated’ a song composed back in 2017 as a set of pieces evolved through the creative process of recording the song. Done in both English and Sinhala, it enables people to simply enjoy the music in the language of their choice.
“I feel music and fashion have always been interconnected in several ways. Through the ages, we’ve seen how musicians and music videos have influenced the way people dress and think,” Soundarie tells us sharing that in the music videos, whilst there are talented singers, actress and model Tashiya Kalidasa, brings out the almost hidden storyline of the song through fashion.
Viewers will be able to access the outfits worn on the video by clicking on the small pop-ups that appear onscreen which will direct you to the Odel.lk online website.

The songs
The Sinhala song Mulawe Maya has music and lyrics by Soundarie David Rodrigo and is performed by Hirushi Jayasena with music production handled by Chamitha Cooray of Saregama Music. Chamitha also produced the English release ‘Complicated’ which is composed by Soundarie with lyrics by Shehan Galahitiyawa. It is performed by Shehara Liyanage.
Both releases feature Pradeep Rodrigo on bass, Andrew Obeyesekere on guitar, Soundarie at the keyboard and Chamitha Cooray on Synth.
