The Central Government should refrain from micro-managing schools reopening and closing and the provincial administration should be given the authority to make informed decisions at grass root level, The Education Forum Sri Lanka (EFSL) said last week.

The EFSL, an independent body that works for quality outcomes in local education, said the 316 divisional offices across the country should be given the authority to make informed decisions.

A recent EFSL press release said the 32 divisional offices together with the 353 Medical Offices of Health (MOH) and principals of schools in those areas should take decisions and act accordingly. It was recommended that the diverse schoolsystem in Sri Lanka be taken into consideration when making decisions.

The school composition in Sri Lanka includes 30% of schools having less than 100 students,   60% of schools between 101 to 1000 students and another 10% of schools with more than 1000 students.

The EFSL also said the Government should bring changes to its national policy that would give an edge to the 50% of students who were unable to use ‘intent tools’ in distant education by providing them with offline resources. Moreover, there were 10169 schools in the country including 353 national schools. (CC)
