Sri Lankans have got lax and are letting down their guard – a clear indication being the number of people in public areas without face-masks.

An observational tour of Town Hall, Havelock Town, Kirulapone, Nugegoda and Kotahena found that many people including those going about their work, trishaw drivers, road-sweepers, parents gathered outside schools, groups of students at bus halts, children and drivers of school vans and pavement vendors were all without face-masks.

Of particular concern were tuition classes with a large number of students attending, staff of cafes and fast food outlets, markets as also bus drivers, conductors and passengers who were not wearing masks and also not following the distancing rule.

Some of the tuition classes did check the temperature of the students and sinks for hand-hygiene were at the entrance but there was no supervision that everyone adhered to these measures.
