Kinniya Central College, Trincomalee and Mahajana College, Tellippalai, Jaffna emerged champions at the CBL Samaposha All Island Under-14 Inter-School Football Championship 2019 held at Racecourse grounds on Wednesday.

Organised in collaboration with the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) and the Sri Lanka Schools’ Football Association (SSFA), the tournament held for the 11th consecutive year kicked off on January 13.

Over 500 teams from across the country’s districts gathered in 32 centres islandwide while 32 boys teams and 28 girls teams qualified as district champions to compete in the knockout round of the competition before the finals were held in Colombo.

Kinniya Central College defeated last year’s winners Muslim Central College, Kalutara 2-1 in the final after having overcome St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy 3-1 in the semifinals.

Mahajana who last won the title in 2015, also defeated last year’s winners Bendiwawe Maha Vidyalaya Girls High School, Polonnaruwa 4-3 in a thrilling penalty shootout after the final was tied at 1-1 in regular time. They beat Kavisigamuwa Central College, Ridigama in the semifinals 3-1.

Mahajana College, Jaffna basking in glory

Kinniya skipper K.M. Kifni was adjudged the Best Player while team mate Naushath Mahrooz was picked as the Best Goalkeeper in the boy’s category.

Mahajana College’s Y. Layansika was adjudged the Best Player while Remeanchana was chosen as the Best Goalkeeper in the girl’s category.

The champion Mahajana College team comprised Y. Layansika, S. Hamshiya, T. Sasmi, S. Sarmika, A. Thansuiya, T. Tharanika, I. Keerthika, U. Sakeena, M. Thusmika, J. Jancy, S. Rammiya, R. Thibika, Y.
