The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) said it had written to the National Police Commission and the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) to order an investigation into the Police failure to exercise discretion when students at a recent Pannipitiya Facebook party were arrested.

CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said among the 77 arrested, there had been students who were mere revelers at the party and they should not have been exposed to the media as children under the influence of drugs.

The Police in a raid conducted on March 8 had arrested the 77 youth at the Facebook party on allegations of using ganja and synthetic drugs.

“This action places the students entire future at stake,” Mr Stalin said.

Those arrested were in the range of 19 to 35 years and had been reportedly using cannabis and synthetic drug pills, the Police alleged. Among the arrested were 60 males and 17 females.
