Defending champions Saman House finished on top with a tally of 397 points to emerge overall champions at the annual Inter-House Sports Meet 2020 of Sri Sangamitta Girls’ National School (formerly BMS), Matale held at Edward Park ground in Matale last week.

Araliya House with 362 points ended up runners-up followed by Manel (360) and Kumudu (269) in the third and fourth places. The meet was held under the patronage of Ms. E.W.L.K. Egodawela the principal of Pushpadana Girls’ College, Kandy (a former principal of Sri Sangamitta Girls NS, Matale), who was the chief guest.

A distinguished old girl as well as a fine athlete produced from Sri Sangamitta Girls NS, H.K. Sagarika Dilhani, Additional District Secretary Kandy graced the occasion as the guest of honour.

Sammani Nugapitiya of Araliya House, who returned best timing in the 100m, 200m and 110m hurdles in the Under-20 category, was adjudged as the Most Outstanding Athlete of the meet. J. Indumadi of Kumudu House, who won the 800m, 1500m and 3000m events in the Under-20 age group, was named the Best Athlete in Track events while Dilki Dharmarathna of Kumudu House took away the award for the Best Athlete in Field events in the Under-20 age category.

The relay teams of Araliya House excelled to win both the junior and senior relay championship titles. The colourful drill display presented by young Sangamittians numbering over 500 thrilled the spectators.

The event was well organised and it was attended by a large gathering. The organising committee headed by Ms. R.H.C.J. Rathnaveera (principal Sri Sangamitta Girls NS), included Ms. C.M.P.P.U. Tennakoon (vice principal), and physical training instructors Pathmika Kulathunga, Vajira Lakshmi Wijerathna, Damayanthi Wijesinghe, Sanjaya Dangampola and Indika Jayawardhana. - LDC
