Education Minister Dullas Alahapperuma has pledged to improve schools in danger of closing down due to a lack of students.

Minister Alahapperuma said this at the Demadaoya Primary School in Nalanda where three new students were admitted for the 2020 intake.

The school, which has operated since 1961, had only one student and four teachers before the new students were admitted this year.

The Minister said the reason behind the lack of students was the lack of resources at the school, and the availability of

several schools with better facilities, located close by.

He added that a Grade level principal was due to take over the school soon.

The Minister said the admission of three students is a good beginning and he hoped more students would be admitted next year.

The Minister said the Government will provide the necessary assistance to the school.

He said his responsibility is not just to build new schools but to elevate the standards of those in danger of closing down due to a lack of students and resources.
