Education Minister: National schools admission issues remain unsolved

Education Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said complications of the Grade One admissions to national schools still exist.   The minister said this is because the principals of these schools haven’t been given the responsibility of seeing to these issues, and they have a limited decision making capacity.

“Even though the Education Ministry is responsible for national schools a discussion between national school principals and the Education Minister hasn’t happened for over a year,” he said, when he addressed 374 national school principals recently.

The minister has identified critical problems in the education sector that have not been addressed for over a decade. He said the present government is determined to make education a contributory force for the country’s development, and the school community will be directed by the government.

“It is our priority to increase the productivity of national schools to strengthen education, by providing trained teachers, increasing class room facilities and improving infrastructure facilities. This should happen while continuously providing leadership training,” the Minister said.

“Decentralising power will cut down present education sector issues. All responsible parties need to play a role in improving education, and individuals should identify their role,” he added.

An awareness lecture in preventing the drug menace in national schools was also conducted by the Western Province Police Deputy Inspector General Deshamanya T.M.W.Tennakoon.
